Community Lacemaking NEWCASTLE

Learn all the basics to make a piece of needle lace, and contribute to a large-scale lace artwork.

Newcastle Art Space

Service Description

The community lacemaking project is a year long series of workshops, gatherings, talks and online classes that aim to put the basic skills of needle lacemaking into as many hands as possible. Needle lace is a centuries old craft which has traditionally been passed from hand to hand. There are now few practitioners and even fewer resources for people to learn. In a community lacemaking project session, each person will make a small leaf-shaped sampler that covers all the basic needle lacing skills. Then the samplers will be collected and turned into one large-scale work to be exhibited at the Australian Design Centre in June 2024. The classes are all free to participate, with an optional $5 donation to cover materials, venues and travel costs. The session runs from 10am until mid afternoon. Come anytime for as long as you need. One leaf will most likely take 2 or 3 hours.
